Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate, and Jennifer M. Granholm , the United States' Secretary of Energy, Friday, February 16th in Harpa announced the new cooperation between Iceland and the United States in the field of energy and climate.
It is planned that the countries will cooperate in the field of geothermal energy, absorption and storage/use of carbon dioxide, and production and use of hydrogen. The goal of the partnership is, among other things, to facilitate the cooperation of various stakeholders, in the efforts of both countries, to:
- Achieve their climate goals
- Speed the decline in carbon emissions
- Develop innovative ways to harness renewable energy
- Promote energy security
- Work on cooperative projects with other states to speed up the energy transition
Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate: "The cooperation we are starting here today marks a turning point. Icelandic solutions can make a difference on a global scale, so it is no coincidence that the United States chooses Iceland as a partner in energy and climate issues. Iceland is an international energy and climate leader, and Icelandic companies are at the forefront of the world regarding climate solutions such as carbon capture . The American government has greatly increased the focus and resources on climate and clean energy solutions, and the cooperation that was launched today confirms what we know, that Icelandic solutions and ingenuity can make a difference on a global scale."
Jennifer M. Granholm, Secretary of Energy of the United States: "We are thrilled to be starting cooperation between the United States and Iceland in energy and climate matters. As we work with our international partners to accelerate the green energy transition to increase energy security, Iceland has already achieved so much. The future of the world's energy issues can already be found in Iceland, and we look forward to working with Guðlaug Þór and his team to promote and scale up these energy and climate solutions."
Cooperation between the states means that the states aim to pave the way for companies, universities and research institutes, entrepreneurs, and others who work on renewable energy and solutions in the field of climate issues.
There is a lot of interest from foreign countries and parties in cooperation with Iceland in the field of clean energy and climate issues. The American authorities, including Granholm, have shown a great interest in Iceland's energy issues, but in recent years the United States has placed a great deal more emphasis on clean energy, among other things, by passing bills that provide funding for projects in that field.
Cooperation between the states began today with a discussion forum on the state's energy and climate issues, where drafts were made regarding possible cooperation projects. Cooperation in experimental projects, research, and technological development is considered of special importance. Representatives of the Icelandic and American governments participated in the meeting, the aim is to hold similar meetings every other year.
On the occasion, Guðlaugur Þór and Granholm also had a bilateral meeting in Harpa, and then the ministers visited Hellisheidavirkjun, where Granholm learned about Icelandic ingenuity in the use of geothermal energy, carbon management and capture, as well as ways to produce innovative fuels.
