We at Arctic Portal.org are proud to be featured as a contributor in Sacred Earth, a forthcoming hardback art book by British artist Fiona McIntyre ARE (Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers). The publication brings together art, science, and environmental advocacy.
Sacred Earth presents more than 80 pages of McIntyre’s paintings, drawings, and prints, many of which were created with pigments she prepares herself from earth and stone gathered directly from the regions she studies. The book’s three chapters, water, tree, and stone, explore the elemental foundations of life, each paired with expert commentary from leaders in ecology, climate science, and heritage.
Arctic Portal’s.org Contribution
Arctic Portal.org highlights the alarming rate of glacial melt in Iceland, with Mýrdalsjökull retreating by approximately one metre every year while its ice sheet simultaneously thins. The contribution stresses the urgent need for informed governance, responsible tourism, and strengthened global awareness.
We think this publication helps bridge the gap between scientific understanding and emotional connection. Fiona’s images capture these fragile landscapes with a delicacy that encourages viewers to reflect, understand, and ultimately protect.
Our text underscores that glacial retreat in Iceland mirrors the wider climate emergency unfolding across the Arctic and the planet, making projects like Sacred Earth vital tools for public engagement.
A Collaborative Effort Between Artists and Environmental Leaders
Alongside Arctic Portal’s.org contribution, Sacred Earth features insights from Jane Sayers, Wild Pine Project Officer at Dundreggan Rewilding Centre in Scotland; Dr. Stanislav Edward Shmelev, Full Member of the Club of Rome and CEO of Environment Europe Foundation; and author and broadcaster Anthony Adolph. Their combined voices support McIntyre’s central message: that landscapes hold stories we cannot afford to lose.
“I hope that you can hear the subtle message in my art calling to you, to remember,” McIntyre said, reflecting on the inspiration behind the work.
From Kickstarter to Publication and Launch
Building on the success of her earlier Kickstarter-funded book A Tree Within, McIntyre has again turned to community support to bring Sacred Earth to life. Once the project reaches its funding target, production will move quickly, with the book set for an official launch in April 2026 at the Nature in Art Museum in Gloucestershire.
Arctic Portal.org looks forward to the publication and the opportunity it provides to expand awareness about fragile Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems. We are delighted to be included in this important cultural and environmental project, and we wholeheartedly support its message and mission.
For readers wishing to support the project, the Sacred Earth Kickstarter campaign is now live. Early backing will help ensure the book’s timely publication and the successful launch of the accompanying exhibition. Supporters can learn more and contribute via the project’s Kickstarter page.
