UArctic Congress Conference Opens Today in the Faroe Islands
- Details
An international conference focused on the future of the Arctic Ocean opens today, 26 May, in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, bringing together scientists, Indigenous representatives, policymakers, and Arctic stakeholders to discuss the rapidly changing Arctic marine environment.
The Ocean Connectivity Conference, taking place May 26–28 as part of the UArctic Congress 2026, is being hosted under the Kingdom of Denmark’s 2025–2027 Chairship of the Arctic Council in partnership with the University of the Faroe Islands. Oceans are one of the five key priorities of the Danish chairship program.
Over the next three days, participants will explore some of the most pressing challenges facing Arctic waters and coastal communities through sessions focused on ocean dynamics and observation systems, marine pollution and ecosystem impacts, safe and resilient Arctic shipping, marine biodiversity and conservation, Indigenous-led stewardship, and the sustainable future of Arctic oceans amid increasing environmental and economic pressures.
The conference comes at a time of growing international attention on the Arctic, where rising temperatures and declining sea ice are rapidly transforming ecosystems, shipping routes, and geopolitical dynamics. According to Arctic research institutions and Arctic Council working groups, the Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the global average.
The Kingdom of Denmark officially assumed the rotating chairship of the Arctic Council in May 2025, succeeding Norway. The chairship represents Denmark together with Greenland and the Faroe Islands and places particular emphasis on cooperation surrounding Indigenous communities, sustainable development, oceans, climate change, and biodiversity.
Thursday, May 28, will be dedicated to “Ocean Day,” featuring Arctic Council-led sessions on ocean governance, marine observation systems, pollution impacts, biodiversity protection, and resilient Arctic shipping.
Organizers say the conference aims to strengthen collaboration between scientific research and Indigenous Knowledge systems while supporting sustainable management of Arctic marine environments at a time of unprecedented environmental change.
The conference is expected to attract participants from across the Arctic region and beyond as global attention increasingly turns toward the environmental, economic, and strategic importance of the Arctic Ocean.
