The Arctic Renewable Energy Atlas (AREA) is a project of the Arctic Council’s Sustainable Development Working Group, focused on supporting sustainable development and healthy, resilient communities in the Arctic.

We bring together tools for Arctic communities working to transition to renewable energy, and showcase this transition to the world. Tools include GIS mapping data, community stories, best practices, training, financing and policy information. It is a living project, which continues to develop as new funds, data and resources become available.

Arctic ROOS is an open forum for national agencies, research institutes, universities as well as commercial bodies to inform, share and develop an Arctic Ocean observing system. It is a regional alliance of the European Global Ocean Observing System (EuroGOOS), whose main objective is to harmonize European operational oceanography activities. Arctic ROOS seeks to coordinate activities with the Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON), the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), and other regional Arctic Ocean observing networks.

PAME's Arctic Ship Traffic Data (ASTD) project has been developed in response to a growing need to collect and distribute accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information on shipping activities in the Arctic.

ASTD collects a wide range of historical information, including ship tracks by ship type, information on number of ships in over 400 ports/communities across the Arctic, detailed measurements on emissions by ships, shipping activity in specific areas (e.g. the EEZ's, Arctic LME's and the Polar Code area), and fuel consumption by ships.

NASA’s Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC), located at Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA, is one of NASA’s Distributed Active Archive Centers supporting the study of Earth’s atmosphere and climate.

ASDC provides atmospheric science data products and services, supporting over 50 projects and offering access to more than 1,000 datasets from satellite observations, field experiments, and models. Its work focuses on areas such as radiation, clouds, aerosols, and atmospheric composition, helping inform scientists, educators, and decision-makers.

Copernicus is the European Union’s Earth observation programme, providing information about the planet and its environment using satellite and in situ data.

Managed by the European Commission and implemented with partners such as ESA, EUMETSAT, ECMWF, and other EU agencies, it delivers large volumes of global data from space- and ground-based systems.

These free and openly accessible services support public authorities, organizations, and service providers in improving quality of life in Europe and beyond.

NASA's Crustal Dynamics Data Information System (CDDIS), one of NASA's Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), provides data and information to support the international space geodesy and geodynamics community. CDDIS is part of the Earth Sciences Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, and serves as one of the core components for the geometric services established under the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), an organization that promotes scientific cooperation and research in geodesy on a global scale.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is a major provider of Earth observation data, delivering a wide range of satellite-based datasets that support research on climate, oceans, land, and the atmosphere. Through its Earth observation programmes—most notably its role in

the Copernicus programme—ESA develops and operates satellites that collect high-quality environmental data from space.

ESA coordinates data from multiple satellite missions, including the Sentinel series and other contributing missions, providing continuous global observations of Earth systems. These datasets are made freely available through online platforms and tools that enable users to discover, access, and analyze data for scientific research, environmental monitoring, and decision-making.

By ensuring open access to reliable Earth observation data, ESA plays a key role in advancing understanding of environmental change and supporting global efforts to address climate and sustainability challenges.

The Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA) is a program based at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) that supports the collection, preservation, and sharing of local and Indigenous knowledge of the Arctic. It works in

partnership with Arctic communities and researchers to document environmental observations, cultural knowledge, and lived experiences of change across the region.

ELOKA provides data management tools and support to ensure that Indigenous knowledge is stored, accessed, and shared in ethical ways that respect community ownership and data sovereignty. By fostering collaboration between local experts and the scientific community, ELOKA contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of Arctic environmental and social change.

NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) provides a comprehensive archive of both data and services, with a focus on hazardous weather, its governing dynamical and physical processes, and associated applications. With this broad mandate, GHRC DAAC focuses on lightning, tropical cyclones, precipitation, and storm-induced hazards through integrated collections of satellite, airborne, and in-situ datasets.

The Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) is the primary international programme on monitoring permafrost parameters. GTN‐P was developed in the 1990s by the International Permafrost Association (IPA) under the Global Climate observing System (GCOS) and the Global Terrestrial Observing Network (GTOS), with the longterm goal of obtaining a comprehensive view of the spatial structure, trends and variability of changes in the active layer thickness and permafrost temperature.

A compilation of existing in situ mass-balance observations on Arctic glaciers. The IASC Network on Arctic Glaciology, formed out of the Working Group on Arctic Glaciology, aims to address these rapid changes in arctic ice masses by initiating scientific programs and facilitating international cooperation between glaciologists and climate modelers in order to develop the understanding of arctic land ice and its role in global climatic and environmental change.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an intergovernmental marine science organization that provides independent scientific advice on the state and sustainable use of the world’s oceans, particularly in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas. Established in 1902 and headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, ICES is one of the oldest international scientific organizations.

ICES brings together a global network of scientists to advance understanding of marine ecosystems, coordinate research, and deliver evidence-based guidance to governments and international bodies on fisheries, environmental management, and ocean sustainability.

Through its data, assessments, and advisory services, ICES supports informed decision-making and promotes the long-term conservation and responsible use of marine resources.

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC), a partnership between the USGS and NASA, provides free access to trusted Earth science data to support

research and applications in areas such as agriculture, geology, urban heat, and wildfire mitigation.

LP DAAC processes, archives, and distributes over 14 petabytes of land remote sensing data from major missions including ASTER, MODIS, VIIRS, ECOSTRESS, GEDI, EMIT, and Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS). Data can be accessed through Earthdata Search and other specialized tools.

In addition, LP DAAC offers resources such as Python Jupyter notebooks via GitHub and tools like AppEEARS, which enables users to extract and analyze geospatial data by point or area.

The Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive & Distribution System Distributed Active Archive Center (LAADS DAAC), based in Greenbelt, MD, archives and distributes data on clouds, water vapor, aerosols, and key instrument data from NASA, NOAA, and ESA missions. It also serves as a backup source for MODIS and VIIRS land products.

LAADS DAAC provides data from multiple satellite and airborne sources, including NASA’s Terra and Aqua MODIS, Suomi NPP and JPSS VIIRS, ESA’s Envisat MERIS, and Copernicus Sentinel-3 instruments.

As one of twelve DAACs within NASA’s EOSDIS, LAADS DAAC offers access to Earth science data through a range of tools.

NSIDC manages and distributes scientific data on snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground, and climate interactions. The National Snow and Ice Data Center encompasses several data centers, data management programs, and data projects. Specialized data managers lead these programs and projects, and provide shared services and infrastructure to all constituents of NSIDC.

Advancing the predictive power of Earth system models through understanding of the structure and function of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems. The goal of NGEE Arctic is to support the DOE’s Biological and Environmental Research (BER) mission to advance a robust predictive understanding of Earth’s climate and environmental systems by delivering a process-rich ecosystem model, extending from bedrock to the top of the vegetative canopy and atmospheric interface, in which the evolution of Arctic ecosystems in a changing climate can be modeled at the scale of a high-resolution ESM grid cell.

The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Polar and Arctic Data Portal provides access to a wide range of environmental data focused on the Arctic and polar regions. It serves as a central hub for datasets related to climate, oceanography, sea ice, weather, and ecosystems, sourced from satellite observations, in situ measurements, and historical records.

By offering free and open access to authoritative data, the portal supports research, environmental monitoring, and decision-making for scientists, policymakers, and the public, contributing to a better understanding of rapidly changing polar environments.

NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC) specializes in data and information relevant to terrestrial biogeochemistry, ecology, and environmental processes, which are critical to understanding the dynamics of Earth's biological, geological, and chemical components.
